Which Technology for which transition?

This keynote first contextualizes the current societal transition in the global history of humanity and technology to identify 'When Are We Now'. It offers an interpretation of human history based on the conflict between coordination systems and their respective elites, and argues we have reached a Third Information Barrier in which market and state-based coordination are no longer sufficient to coordinate human social and economic activity within the long term planetary balance. We have also reached a stage of cybernetic capacity which presents three major visions : a vision of state-centric cybernetic management, pioneered by China; a hegemony of private technological surveillance technology, fusing with the state and oligarchic forces, in the West, but also a third alternative: that of a Archipelago of Regenerative Villages, which is betting on the peer to peer and digital-commons based capacity for a new form of translocal coordination. The challenge of the new civilizational order will be to integrate the long history of 'geographic coordination', in an era of ever faster communication, with the noospheric capacity for permanent and instantaneous digital coordination which is relatively independent of that geography. Which technologies are being developed for such a transition, that takes into account the failures and limitations of Web1 (the early internet), Web2 (the private platform internet) and Web3 (the crypto internet)?

Scales of Sustainable Decentralized Governance with Simpler Technologies

How can we scale open and democratic governance? Our lives are sustained by commons infrastructures from the global scale to the smaller communities and their resilience might rely on their diversity and decentralized ways of scaling. Looking at the distribution of power, participation and diversity of online communities such as wikis or DAOs and drawing from the experience of designing and developing decentralized technologies, this talk questions the need of advanced technologies to achieve democratic and sustainable communities. It calls to explore alternatives to the "move fast, break things" ways of innovation, specially when what we are breaking are our communities and ecosystems. What if the answers are in simpler technologies and community cultures?

How to distribute trust? - A (theoretical) computer scientist’s perspective.

The distribution of trust among several entities is a fundamental principle in the design of democratic societies. This principle has been equally applied to realize computer systems that do not concentrate the trust for the secure execution of the system in a single entity. The resulting systems are also studied under the term `Decentralized Systems', with cryptocurrencies and other blockchain-based applications as their most famous representatives. While decentralization is the guiding principle in the design of decentralized systems, it is not very well studied what it actually means for a system to be "decentralized" or how to systematically compare the degree of decentralization of different systems.

In this talk, we want to make first steps towards addressing this gap from a theoretical perspective. To this end, we will overview different techniques for distributing the trust for the secure execution of a computer system and show approaches to formally characterize and measure the degree of trust distribution in complex decentralized systems that make use of different trust distribution techniques.

When decentralization, security, and privacy are not friends

Decentralization is often seen as a main tool to achieve security and privacy. It has worked in a number of systems, for which decentralization help protect identities and data of users. Thus, it is normal that fields (like machine learning and anonymous communications) attempt to leverage these advantages. In this talk, we will show how that in these applications, decentralization not only doesn’t improve privacy or robustness, but also increase the surface of attack. We end by asking why this is the case and offering some hypothesis to discuss with the audience.

Is there a (need for a) philosophy of AI?

In this talk, we will explore the modes of existence of AI models. If considered as programs produced in a particular way, they can be understood through concepts from the philosophy of computation. As ubiquitous artifacts that affect all aspects of the lifeworld, they fall within the realm of the philosophy of technology. They also have close ties to the philosophy of mind, political philosophy, ethics, and even aesthetics. We will attempt to analyze these divergent perspectives to achieve a partial and precarious synthesis.

These new entities not only hold philosophical interest but also pose new challenges to philosophical practice itself, giving rise to new questions in computational philosophy. In addition to outlining an overview of current research in these areas, we will ultimately focus on the challenges they pose for social and political issues.

From Cypherpunk to Crypto Commons: Emerging Cultures of Coordination

This conversation traces a line from the cypherpunk movement to the emergence of crypto commons and today’s new experiments in collective coordination. Joel Dietz brings the perspective of a community insider, drawing on his work on crypto culture, networks, and the deeper histories of Web3. Felix Fritsch adds a researcher’s lens, based on his dissertation on crypto commons, regenerative finance, and blockchain-enabled governance.
Together, they ask how early ideals of privacy, autonomy, and exit evolved into broader questions of commons, regeneration, and institution-building. What did crypto make newly possible? Where did its cultures get stuck? And what open research questions emerge as digital communities, popup villages, network states, regenerative movements, and commons-oriented projects search for more durable social forms?

Community Infrastructures under Pressure: ICT, Resilience, and Digital Repression from a Socio-Informatics Perspective

This talk introduces the University of Siegen research group's work on ICT use in communities, with a particular focus on socio-informatics, participatory design, and technology appropriation in socially and politically challenging contexts. Drawing on a long tradition of community-based research led by Prof. Dr. Volker Wulf, the talk explores how digital technologies are embedded in everyday practices, collective action, and local forms of resilience.
Building on this broader research perspective, I will present my own work on communities living under authoritarian repression, with Iran as my primary field site. This research investigates how people respond to internet shutdowns, censorship, surveillance, and state control by building, sharing, repairing, and sustaining grassroots digital infrastructures. Rather than treating digital tools as isolated technical systems, the talk highlights the human infrastructures behind them: informal support networks, trust relations, repair practices, risk management, and collective forms of governance.
The talk aims to show how HCI and Socio-Informatics can contribute to understanding how communities sustain digital infrastructures in conflict-affected and repressive environments. It also reflects on the methodological and ethical challenges of conducting research with vulnerable communities under conditions of surveillance, uncertainty, and political risk.

Joshua Davila

Decentralized Solidarity Finance

Bread Cooperative makes financial tools grounded in solidarity finance. This talk covers two of them and the process of building them.

The Solidarity Fund has distributed over $55,000 in community grants without ever accepting a donation. Participants deposit funds into a pool; the interest that accumulates gets directed toward a community currency that funds solidarity projects. The deposited capital stays with its owners. Only the yield is redirected. It's a way of using DeFi yield mechanics toward redistribution rather than further accumulation.

Stacks is a crypto implementation of the rotating savings circle, a form of community finance practiced globally under many names: tandas, susus, chit funds. Participants contribute on a regular cycle and take turns receiving the full pool. Stacks makes these circles programmable, handling commitments and payouts on-chain and extending the model to participants who may not share geography or an existing social network.

We'll talk through how both tools were built, the principles we tried to hold, the tradeoffs we hit around programmability and accessibility, and what we learned from putting them in front of real communities.
