We encourage applicants with diverse backgrounds to apply for the summer school. We target Master’s and PhD students/Post-Docs in academia (computer science, sociology, political science, or a related field), as well as applicants with industry expertise, at NGOs, and as state- or community-level policy-makers.
The Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy fully funds the summer school. Hence, attending the summer school is free of charge for all participants.
Additionally, participants traveling to Bochum for the week will be accommodated in a centrally located hotel at no cost. So as to reduce cost, our default for external participants is to have them share twin rooms (exception possible).
Travel to and from Bochum must be arranged by the participants and, in most cases, cannot be reimbursed.
Selection Criterion
Participants are selected with the goal of maximizing qualification, motivation, and diversity with respect to multiple factors, including country and university of the PhD program, study program, gender, ethnicity, and others. Our goal is to create an interdisciplinary atmosphere where everyone can strive. Applications from women and minorities are especially welcome.
The application form allows applicants to state their motivation for attending the summer school and how they can contribute to its success.
Application Instructions
- Applications are possible until 22nd May 2026 (AOE) via this portal. Please be aware that we can only consider complete applications.
- Please include a motivation statement (150-400 words) in your application on why you would like to attend the summer school.
- For external (non-Bochum) applicants: As stated above, our default is to have people share rooms. If you require a single room and cannot share a hotel room, please indicate so in the application form and what we can do to make your visit as comfortable as possible.
- We can arrange travel to Bochum for a limited number of participants. Please fill out the “Application for extended travel support” section in the application form if this is of interest to you. If your application for the summer school and the extended travel support is accepted, we will invite you and book any necessary transportation to Bochum. Participants can indicate in the application form whether their attendance depends on this support.
- Applications get reviewed on a rolling basis. Hence, we encourage participants to submit their applications early.
