Max Planck Fellowship for Eike Kiltz

January 21, 2025

Eike Kiltz, Professor at Ruhr University Bochum, joins MPI-SP as a Max Planck Fellow in January 2025. The aim of the Max Planck Fellow Program is to strengthen the cooperation between Max Planck institutes and university researchers.

The imminent threat of quantum computers for current cryptographic schemes has determined organizations such as the US National Institute of Standards and Technologies (NIST) to search for new quantum-resistant encryption methods. Ruhr University Bochum’s Chair of Cryptography, Eike Kiltz, and MPI-SP’s Director, Peter Schwabe, are part of the teams that designed two of the encryption schemes that NIST selected for standardization. The Max Planck Fellows program will support the continuation and expansion of this cooperation.

Eike Kiltz has numerous academic achievements, most notably a Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz Prize he won in 2024 “for his fundamental and pioneering work in the field of public-key cryptography, which has had a lasting impact on theory and practice.” His research group aims to conduct basic cryptographic research with practical relevance.

“I am honored to receive this fellowship from the Max Planck Society.”, says Eike Kiltz. “The opportunity to establish a small research group at MPI-SP will enable us to advance our collaborative work developing post-quantum cryptographic schemes”.

The Max Planck Fellow Program, offered by the Max Planck Society, was initiated in 2005 to strengthen the cooperation between Max Planck scientists and researchers from neighboring universities.  Recipients of the fellowship can establish a small research group at the hosting institute for a period of 5 years.
